From 1897 until approximately 1914, "Chelsea" Clock Company kept
very detailed sales records of each clock sold. This detail included serial number,
date sold, original customer, dial size/type, case type/finish, and movement
type. The total number of clocks of all kinds produced during this period was just
under 98,000. This number included 284 12" dial clocks of all types. This
number averages just under 17 clocks per year for the total period. During the
golden years of 12" production, 1906 to 1913, production just barely exceeded 20
clocks per year. It is interesting to note that striking clock production, in
12" size, did not begin until 1903 and any significant production of these
clocks did not begin until 1905. After 1914, the factory records are not as
detailed, and size of clocks was generally omitted. 12" dial striking clocks
were offered in "Chelsea" catalogs until 1926 and 12" dial time only clocks
were offered until 1941. Special orders were available after these dates,
however, production was very low. Although the exact numbers of 12"
clocks produced after 1914 can only be estimated, study of the numbers and types of
these clocks produced prior to 1914 serves as a basis for comparison. The
following table is the record of the 284 12" clocks produced between 1897 and
1914. This information is the most detailed that can be determined from the factory
records and is a combination of sales records and movement type records.
Movement types are listed as TO, time only, STKR, house strike, and SB, ship's
bell. Dial types are listed as SPCL, special, SPCLGr,
special grand, or E?P, where the record does not indicate if the dial was engraved or
painted.. Case type entries can be decoded with a review of the general information
pages and available case styles shown in period catalogs. See the
1906, 1911, and 1923 catalogs on this
website. It is interesting to note the variety of retailers that sold
"Chelsea" clocks. Those serial numbers shown in bold are
known to exist in present day collections.
